"Planting today ensures a greener tomorrow." - Free Trees Ireland

The theme for National Tree Week 2024, 'Planting Trees for a Greener Future,' resonates deeply with the mission of Free Trees Ireland: 'growing today for a greener tomorrow.' Spearheaded by Paddy Mangan, the initiative began in December 2023 as a response to the decline of ash trees due to Ash dieback. Beyond mere replacement, the goal is to bolster biodiversity and restore Ireland's landscape, which has dwindled from 80% tree coverage to a mere 11%, way below 35% in the rest of Europe..

With a focus on Co Meath, the distribution of semi-mature trees to local schools aims to foster environmental stewardship among children. Seeing the growth progression firsthand ignites excitement and instils a sense of responsibility towards nature. Notably, 115 schools eagerly accepted the trees, except for a few undergoing renovations.

"Trees are more than just scenery; they're the cornerstone of biodiversity." - Let's plant for the future!

Partnering with Adam Ryan from Kilkenny, who specialises in native Irish trees, ensures the health and suitability of the trees for the local environment. Trees have been an integral part of all of our lives in one way or another and many of our castles with their beautiful and lovingly tended gardens have thousands of visitors every year. What better way to say thank you and preserve these places of interest for our future generations than to plant an Irish Oak among some of the other species.

In this case head gardeners were contacted and delighted to receive 12-14 foot trees and are looking forward to staying involved with Free Trees Ireland as we increase our footprint across the island. So far we have planted or have commitments to plant trees at Dublin Zoo, Iveagh Gardens, Malahide Castle, Powerscourt Estate, Birr Castle, Kilkenny Castle, Woodstock Gardens, The Irish National Stud and Gardens, Johnstown Castle, Blarney Castle, Altamont Gardens, Fota House, Tullynally Castle, Huntington Castle, Emo Court and Gardens, Lough Boora Parklands, Strokestown House and Mount Congreve Gardens.

The ripple effects of tree planting extend far beyond aesthetics. They create habitats for birds, bees, and other wildlife, enriching the ecosystem and providing invaluable educational opportunities. Ever since the first tree was handed out we have met so many like minded and knowledgeable people who are eager to help in any way they can and this will lead to further future nature days with schools. Get togethers with groups to engage and instruct people how to grow their own trees from seeds, graft fruit trees, create pollinator friendly environments and at the end of the day enhance biodiversity as they go. Moreover, community engagement is pivotal, with plans for nature days and workshops to empower individuals in tree cultivation and environmental conservation.

As Free Trees Ireland aims to give away 120,000 trees every year, collective action becomes paramount. Every tree planted contributes to a greener, healthier future for Ireland.
